Greater Tuna Director's Notes When Steve first proposed the idea of doing Greater Tuna, I thought no way (but you couldn't say no to Steve). After Our Town and The Silver Whistle, my brain couldn't hold that many lines again. After hearing about the show another three or four hundred times, I finally agreed to take a look at it. I saw a collection of characters that were pathetic, innocent and lovable. Their lives have hopes, disappointments, and strange twists. Just like our own lives. How could I turn down a chance to do a show that had all that? I'd like to thank Steve and the entire crew for all the hard work it's taken to get "Greater Tuna" on the stage. So welcome to Tuna, here the Lions are too liberal and the Jaguars will probably never win a football game. Steve asked me to give my thoughts on this show. When Al and Steve asked me to produce for them, I jumped at the chance (unlike Al) to work with two of the finest comedic actors in our theatre group. After sitting in on a few rehearsals, I could really appreciate how challenging this show is and how easy they make it look. From learning all the lines, to the timing, to the characterization of each person they portray. Thanks guys for allowing me to be a part of this show. It's been a pleasure. Now sit back and enjoy the show. Steve Stone as Thurston, Wheelis, Elmer Watkins, Bertha Bumiller, Yippy, Leonard Childers, Pearl Buras, R. R. Snavely, Rev. Spikes, Sheriff Givens, and Hank Bumiller. Al Price as Arles Struvie, Didi Snavely, Harold Dean Lattimer, Petey Fisk, Jody Bumiller, Stanley Bumiller, Charlene Bumiller, Chad Hartford, Phinas Blye, and Vera Carp.
Steve Stone first became involved in ACT in the early eighties with a role in Harvey. Since then he has done almost all jobs on stage, backstage, and on the Board. Performance highlights include Felix in The Odd Couple and the title role in The Nerd. Steve has directed several plays for ACT and is most proud of Our Town, the first production in our present theatre location. Steve is a self-employed Pension and Investment Consultant. He is married to Beverly and as two daughters and two step daughters; so being surrounded by females, he says it helps him hone both his acting and directing skills. It's great to have you back Steve! Kevin Sprague (Producer) has been a member of ACT since 1992 when he appeared in I Remember Mama. Since that time Kevin has acted, and directed several ACT shows and Summerfest melodramas. Some of the most memorable have been Mousetrap, Comedy Murders of 1940, Arsenic and Old Lace, Harvey, The Silver Whistle, Bedful of Foreigners, and last spring's production of Cash on Delivery. This spring he will be directing the classic comedy You Can't Take it with You. Kevin has served on the Board as President in the past and has currently been re-elected to the Board as President-elect. Al Price has been a part of ACT since 1984 when he was the caretaker in George Washington Slept Here. Since then , he's appeared in and directed several musicals and plays. He feels all of the productions were great, but some of his favorites are Oklahoma, Guys and Dolls, Play On, Our Town, Nunsense, The Sunshine Boys, and Cash on Delivery. Another "memorable role" was when he served on the ACT Board when the current theatre was developed and he was in the first show. He's also performed with Act II, appeared in Summerfest melodramas and ACT murder mysteries. Al, and his wife Jan, have three wonderful children and 2 beautiful grandchildren. Al, Jan and the kids, have appeared together in ACT productions. It will be a few years before the little ones get to work with Grandpa and Grandma. As an old timer, Al has seen ACT go from a wandering group of gypsies begging for places to perform, and storing props and costumes in a rented garage, to the organization we have today. It's literally involved blood, sweat and tears, but Al feels that , "With the growing support of our audiences and the community, the best is yet to come. Al would like to dedicate his performance to the "Saints." The people who worked so hard to bring live theatre to Ankeny and will never "trod these boards" again. We should never forget them.
