No Use Running

Auditions.  Scary word, right?!? We know just how you feel when you walk into a room full of eligible people who are trying out for the same part you are. We’ve all been there. Pressure like this could make some people so nervous that they turn the other way and run! But here at ACT, we want you to be able to walk into the room and not be threatened by the "A" word. We want you to remind yourself that ACT is "A Community of Talent." We aren’t professionals from New York or born actors and actresses, but rather, we are your everyday individuals looking to have a great time. Our goal is to put on a great show for Ankeny and the surrounding community. Here are a few hints and facts about auditions... just so you can familiarize yourself so you aren’t the one turning around to run.

Who may audition? Anyone may volunteer to audition, depending on the age group for the selected play. Some people come to auditions who are long time ACT actors. Some are brand new. No experience is necessary for tryouts.

When are the auditions? Generally, auditions are on Sunday afternoons and Monday nights. Call back dates vary depending on the director of the play and the time frame that he or she determines. ACT always auditions for one show at a time, usually around the same time that another play is ending. The auditions are always posted in the Ankeny Press Citizen, Des Moines Register, Datebook, Ames Daily Tribune, Nevada Journal, Tri-County Times and on the ACT web site.

Do you have to prepare? No, you don’t have to prepare for auditions, though, you may want to familiarize yourself with the play. You may want to look through the script to see if there is a specific part you would like to try out for. Make sure you don’t pick a specific character. Try to read and see yourself as many different parts - that makes you a more eligible candidate.  If it is a musical, you may want to hear how some of the songs go. When trying out for a musical, you can bring your own piece of music to sing or you can choose one from the play.

What about rehearsals? At auditions, the director will hand out a copy of the rehearsal schedule. This calendar is tentative, and more rehearsals will probably be added once the cast is picked and rehearsals are up and going. Rehearsals are Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Sundays. The average rehearsal time is six weeks before the show. Main stage shows run three weekends making it a total of eight shows. Alternate shows run for two weekends for a total of five shows.

We love to see brand new faces as well as old familiar ones. We want to stress that we are a community of talent, and talent takes form in many different people. If you have other questions, you are welcome to contact us by email, or call any ACT board member.
